Top o’ the Matcha to you!!

St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favourite days, although my love of the colour green certainly contributes to that! We’ve spent this St. Patrick’s day coming up with some fantastic beverage combinations incorporating Matcha green tea and some of our favourite drinks, creating an even better combination: antioxidants and alcohol! St. Patrick’s day and green beer are synonymous, so we’ve upped the game by using Matcha instead of food colouring to achieve that perfect shade of shamrock!  To do this at home all you need to do is add 1/8th of a teaspoon of Matcha to the bottom of … Read more…

Steampunk & Tea

I have to say, I’d heard of Steampunk before but I didn’t really know that much about it. I have a cousin who’s very interested in it, so when I had a chance a few weeks ago to sit in on an “Introduction to Steampunk” lecture at Ottawa Comiccon, I took it! I was inspired by all of the interesting facts and did a little more research over the following weeks. Let me tell you, after what I’ve stumbled across I think I’m definitely going to be heading out to some of the Ottawa Steampunk events. It turns out that … Read more…

Matcha Loca: Local Review

Everyone knows that matcha is gaining in popularity, one of the reasons is its unique versatility. I had the pleasure of visiting a few of my favorite local snack shops recently, and matcha was the name of the game! I popped into  Suzy Q, where lo and behold they were serving up some fantastic doughnuts with a lovely matcha and genmaicha icing, which of course, as is their custom, had the best name and label in the display case! They had incorporated the matcha into a delightful icing to top their doughnuts, and then sprinkled some genmaicha on top for … Read more…

Tea & Tunes

I’ve always been sort of obsessed with tea, and learning more about it in any way possible. I also like to combine my interests whenever possible, and of course there are those random conversations with friends that bring up questions that prompt you to go hunting on the internet. Recently I was talking with some friends about  favourite things. Tea parties came up, which led to us discussing one of the best songs ever* Flight of the Conchords Hiphopopotamus Vs. Rhymenoceros. This in turn got me thinking about other songs that feature tea in the lyrics. So I type my … Read more…

Let’s just be real, I’m a bit of a tea snob: Afternoon Tea VS High Tea

One of my many little neurotic pet peeves regarding tea is when someone says they’d like to go for “High Tea”  instead of the technically correct term “Afternoon Tea,” which has a long and storied history. In reality it doesn’t REALLY matter, 99.999999% of the populous will know exactly what you’re talking about, however there is a difference between the two.  Here’s a brief rundown of those differences: Afternoon Tea is the practice of eating scones, small cakes and other ‘fancies’, usually at 4pm. This was originally the domain of the elite of the 19th century, served in the parlor … Read more…

Let’s just be real, I’m a bit of a tea snob: The Rules

I get it, we all have various opinions and they’re all valid. However, what is NOT valid is telling someone else that their preference and opinion is wrong. There’s a lot of tea out there guys, and there’s certainly enough room for us all around the table. You love loose leaf? Great! More into the tea bag? That’s awesome! Loving your Teavana and Davids flavored blends? Fantastic! More of an organic, local shop supporter? High five! There is NO right or wrong way to enjoy your tea, unless of course you’re adding the tea to the water, instead of the … Read more…

Tea Cocktails!

With spring on the horizon (seriously Mother Nature, just STOP with the snow and ice already!!), it’s time to start thinking about patios and sunshine, and with those thoughts in mind I want to share a couple of my favorite warm weather tea cocktails with you. Nothing beats an afternoon relaxing on the patio or in the back yard with a cocktail in hand! First, for those of you who think alcohol and caffeine together is going a bit too far, I’ll share one of my favorite herbal tea cocktails. This drink combines the refreshing and tart notes of hibiscus … Read more…
